New Kid on the Block

Driven to Deep Center has just added a new contributor to the site: Muller. My roommate and long-time Phillies fan (his dad was boys with Tug McGraw) has been watching me blog about the Fightins for over 4 months now and has decided he wanted to contribute to the cause. He will add a new perspective to the site and will undoubtedly bring a new wave of humor. What I can tell you about him:

- He hates the Yankees with an indescribable passion
- Aaron Rowand is his god, mainly because he hit 91 homeruns for him in MVP Baseball
- He wishes he was Jack Bauer
- He would go gay for Shane Victorino

Okay, now a random Phillies question for you to think amongst yourself
Who will hit more homeruns, Jimmy Rollins or Wes Helms?

I think Rollins and Helms both take a step back from last year's numbers. That being said, I'll take Helms at 6-4, 235 as the better bet over 5-8, 165 Rollins...even though he will probably give up 150 ABs to J-Roll. If Helms gets over 400 ABs, I say he hits 18-23. I put Rollins at 15-18.

I could see both around 12-15. I'd prefer to have Jimmy swipe 40 bags than hit 20 dingers. Helms is more of that Mark Grace, gap line drive guy - a doubles guy.

Pete- your predictions are pretty much the same as mine. Jimmy- 16-18, Helms- 20-22.

Welcome to the blogsphere Muller!

I don't want Rollins to hit more home runs than Helms, but he does love to swing for the fences.

3 writers? Should be interesting for you guys. I almost got my roomate to write for my blog, but he's a huge mets fan and it just wouldn't work the way it is now. Maybe some other time.

Pete seems to be on the money. And I also would rather Rollins concentrate more on getting on first, second or third base rather than running them all at once. But his power doesn't make me to upset.

3 writers...yea...well Patrick has only posted twice since we started this and I was looking for some more help. It's basically 2.

Don't get it twisted though, I am still the king of this shit!

It's kind of sad how bad our 3rd basemen have been since Rolen left. I mean, to think that we are excited to get maybe 20 homers from a guy, because it means that we won't have the WORST hitter in the league manning the hot corner. Seriously: excited and 20 homers...these 2 things go well with shortstops...not 3rd basemen.

And if that's not bad enough, I think we're giving up so much more defense than we realize with Helms, for still below average power at 3rd.

I would love to see Gillick somehow bring Hank Blalock in here for Lieber, which was supposed to happen last year. That way, Helms becomes a supersub, trade Rowand for a reliever, and let Werth and Helms platoon in right with Bourn or Roberson also helping out. Then, stop pinch hitting for Burrell late in games and stop giving him days off if his foot is healthy. If you prorate his pace last year to the # of ABs Howard got, he hits 36 homers and 119 RBI, perfect numbers for a left fielder in this lineup.

Then, your reserves are Dobbs, Coste, Helms, Nunez, Roberson and Barajas/Ruiz. Dobbs or Coste need to be able to play some outfield in addition to Helms and Roberson.

I realize this gives up a lot of defense when Helms is in the outfield, but hopefully Werth can play 120 games, and if he comes near his potential, it should be a great addition to the team. And the power and fear that Blalock would provide, should catapult this lineup to tops in the majors, not just the NL.

Rollins
Victorino
Utley
Howard
Blalock
Burrell
Werth/Helms
Barajas/Ruiz

...amazing...

Welcome, Muller. Anyways, I'd say J-Roll because Helms undoubtedly will lose ABs unless he comes out of the gate creaming the ball.

yea, last week I talked about Helms being a HUGE defensive liability. That seems to be vastly overlooked by a lot of people. He HAS to make up for his glove with his bat.

I personally say Rollins, because Manuel is going to substitute Helms a lot for Nunez. Jimmy will 100% get more ABs than Wes so his chances are increased.

Thanks to everyone wishing me well, I'm excited to get going on about the Phils. And I say Rollins will hit more HRs, only because he'll probably have more ABs and, more importantly, because he is like Willie Mays Hayes in my mind.
